The Big Lunch was started in 2009 by the Eden Project in Cornwall. It aims to bring together as many people as possible across the UK to have lunch with their neighbours on the first Monday in June, in a spirit of fun and community.
June 2015 was the first time the University of Reading had hosted such an event, so it was a real privilege when they wanted Whoa! Joe read for Storytime in The Learning Hub for 3 – 5 year olds.
In the end, over 500 staff, students and members of the local community attended – having picnics and dancing on the lawn to the town’s band; participating in circus skills; a children’s trail and of course, Storytime in The Hub.

Even though the sun was shining and there was popcorn and ice-cream outside, books and imagination have a magnetism all their own…
